In terms of size, the Lombardy Castle in Enna can be considered one of the largest manors in Sicily. It was recently included among the top one hundred most beautiful castles in Italy. The name of the castle probably derives from the settlement of Lombard people in the Norman era, but its foundation dates back to the period of the Sicani, who established the home of the Chthonic divinities there, later identified with the Greek Demeter and Core and the Roman Ceres and Proserpine. It is located on a hill over 940 meters above sea level. and was considered in antiquity as an impregnable fortress.

Il castello infatti ha tre lati difesi naturalmente da dirupi a strapiombo che ne rendono impossibile l’accesso. L’inespugnabile Castello di Lombardia a pianta pentagonale e torri quadrate, sorge sul monte che sovrasta Enna.
Il castello di Lombardia fu più volte rimaneggiato nel corso dei secoli; gli Arabi lo trasformarono in castrum, in seguito venne  trasformato in possente fortezza dagli ingegneri di Federico II di Svevia ed infine Federico III d’Aragona lo adibì a propria dimora.  Il perimetro della cinta misura 1.250 passi, mentre l’intero complesso, per la vastità della superficie, poteva offrire un comodo ricovero per la popolazione locale e per la guarigione.

The main door of the castle opens towards the city, a second door opens in the western wall, while a third, "the false door", opens towards the south. There are three large courtyards inside: the “delle Armi” court, the “delle Vettovaglie” court and the “Piazzale di S. Martino”. The Parliamentary Hall, the lower part of the chapel of San Martino, the cellars, the stables, the granaries and the wells are still visible. Originally it was defended by twenty towers of which only six are preserved today; from the main tower, "Torre Pisana", located on Piazzale S. Martino, you can certainly enjoy one of the most evocative views of Sicily.
