MUNICIPIO e Teatro Garibaldi
Strongly desired by the mayor Gaetano Grimaldi Arezzo, marquis of Terresena, who initially had to shelve the project due to the uncertainty of the site on which to build, it was built based on a design by the architect Giovanni Sberna on the available land of the municipal house and inaugurated on 5 November 1872 by the mayor Sebastiano Ajala with Verdi's opera “Ernani”. After the city was elevated to the provincial capital, it was decided to reconstruct the theater in reinforced concrete for a capacity of 360 seats distributed between the stalls and boxes which from three tiers became four, the demolition of the wooden structures and a new decorative enrichment obtained through the use of stucco, velvet, lights and the ceiling frescoes by the Palermo painter Leopoldo Messina.
Mercato Sant’Antonio e Chiesa dell’Addolorata
The so-called Mercato Sant'Antonio is located along a parallel road to Via Roma. The "chiazza" district arose around it, whose toponymic origin is influenced by the derivation of the facing Plaza Major known in dialect as "chianu dè casi ranni". During the Spanish domination, the prisons where those condemned to death were held, whose execution took place right in Plaza Major, were located in this neighborhood. Next to the prisons was the chapel of the Pietà which became a place of prayer for the condemned who paused in front of a painting of Our Lady of Sorrows, illuminated day and night by an oil lantern. As soon as the prisons fell into disuse, these rooms were used as warehouses for traders but the shopkeepers in the neighborhood always maintained the custom of not letting the lantern go out in front of the effigy of the Madonna of the Seven Sorrows. It was towards the end of the 17th century that the construction of the Church began by a shopkeeper and was continued by Canon Giuseppe Ribis. In 1744 the artistic bell tower with majolica cusp was completed and the still existing wrought iron gate was built. The church is home to the brotherhood of the same name which has the privilege of carrying on its shoulders during the Good Friday procession the simulacrum of the "Madonna dei Sette Dolori" sculpted in paper mache towards the end of the 18th century by the Enna artist Luigi Felice.
